Portrait of John Forster engraved by C.H. Jeens.  Forster was the author of the Life of Charles Dickens.  Forster reviewed and provided editorial comments on many of Dickens's works, and acted as Dickens's confidant on numerous matters, including his relations with publishers.  Forster acted as a go-between during Dickens's separation from Catherine, and counseled Dickens against airing publicly (through a "Personal Statement" in “Household Words”) the details of his marital problems.
