Front wrapper from Part Two of Master Humphrey’s Clock.  This work was an experiment on Dickens’s part.  It was decided to issue the series in both weekly and monthly issues.  The issues were to re-introduce the characters of Mr. Pickwick and Sam Weller, and were to include essays entitled “Letters From Imaginary Correspondents, etc.”  While the First Part of Master Humphrey’s Clock had a circulation of 70,000, this fell so quickly that the project was abandoned with the fourth number.  The serial form of publication was re-adopted to coincide with the introduction of The Old Curiosity Shop, and was continued with Barnaby Rudge.  This green wrapper illustrates the monthly issue, priced at one shilling.
