Portrait of Mrs. Watson, from a picture at Rockingham Castle.  Mrs. Watson was the joint dedicatee of David Copperfield, and became a confidant of Dickens.  Edgar Johnson, Dickens's biographer, cites a letter in the Huntington Library dated December 7th, 1857 in which Dickens, writing to Mrs. Watson, refers to his mistress Ellen Ternan as “The Princess whom I adore.”
