Three-page autograph letter signed by Marcus Stone, addressed to “My dear Watkins”, dated January 27, 1863 on Russell House stationery.  In this letter, Stone mentions William Frith, who painted a portrait of Dickens.  The letter is signed “With best wishes, yours truly.”  Stone illustrated Our Mutual Friend.  Marcus Stone’s father, Frank Stone ARA, illustrated several books by Dickens and the two were close friends; their children played together and Marcus Stone was treated like one of the Dickens family.  Upon Frank Stone’s death, Dickens took Marcus under his wing and in addition to Our Mutual Friend, steered commissions his way including the Library Edition of several of Dickens's works, notably Great Expectations and Little Dorrit.
