Portrait of Luke Fildes A.R.A., who was the illustrator of Edwin Drood.  While he was acquainted with Dickens for only the few months immediately prior to Dickens's death in June 1870, Fildes had a great admiration for the novelist.  Shortly after Dickens's death, Fildes painted “The Empty Chair,” showing Dickens's study at Gads Hill as Dickens left it.
