Original crimson front cloth cover and backstrip from The Chimes by Charles Dickens.  The first issue of the first edition (as here) has a bright crimson cover with gilt stamps on the side and backstrip.  In this Christmas book, Dickens continued with his social protest theme of “rich vs. poor.” Some of the characters (e.g. Alderman Bowley and Sir Joseph) represent the rich establishment; while others (e.g. Trotty Veck and Meg) represent the poor.
