Engraving of Alfred Crowquill, with facsimile signature.  The second issue of the first edition of Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi by Charles Dickens has the last plate in the book by George Cruikshank crudely embellished with a border.  Bentley, the publisher, removed this poor attempt to “improve” the plate in later editions.  Alfred Crowquill and George Augustus Sala have been accused of this attempt to improve upon Cruikshank’s work.  However, as Sala was only ten years of age at the time of the book’s publication, his participation seems highly unlikely.
