In addition to Oliver Twist, Dickens made other contributions to “Bentley’s Miscellany.”  Chief among these was the “Public Life of Mr. Tulrumble, Once Mayor of Mudfog.”  These other contributions were known collectively as “The Mudfog Papers.”  According to Eckel, “The Mudfog Papers” satirized the so-called “Learned Societies” which flourished at this period.  This illustration, drawn by George Cruikshank, is entitled “Tom Twigger in the kitchen of Mudfog House” and formed the frontispiece for the first “Mudfog Paper,” the “Public Life of Mr. Tulrumble” which appeared in the January 1837 number of “Bentley’s Miscellany.”
