Three-page autograph letter dated 13 January, 1864, addressed “Sir” and signed “Y: Obdt Servant: Mr. J. Camden Hotten.”  In this letter, Hotten writes that he has forwarded some books.  In 1859, Dickens contributed a story entitled “Hunted Down” to the “New York Ledger.”  In 1870, Hotten reprinted “Hunted Down,” and that reprint was believed for a time to have been the first book appearance of the story.  However, an earlier American reprint bearing the copyright date of 1861 predates the Hotten publication.  The American publication states “This is the first and only story that Mr. Dickens has ever written for an American publication.  It was originally published in the New York Ledger and we have their permission to copy it from that periodical.”
