Portrait of Mrs. E.C. Gaskell, writer of a number of novels; the most popular of these was Cranford.  In his Bibliography chapter on “Writings Ascribed to Dickens,” Eckel discusses the incorrect attribution of “Lizzie Leigh,” a story originally published in “Household Words,” a periodical edited by Dickens.  In fact, “Lizzie Leigh” was written by Gaskell.  In 1850 and 1851 the story had been published in book form, and incorrectly listed Dickens as the author.
